Serbia Police Find Modigliani Photo in Search

“BELGRADE, SERBIA (AP).- Serbian police searching for a war-crimes fugitive on Thursday instead found photographs of a stolen Modigliani painting they suspect is in his possession.
The war crimes prosecutor’s office said the police searched a house in the northern city of Novi Sad belonging to a close friend of Goran Hadzic, a former Croatian Serb rebel leader wanted by a U.N. tribunal over atrocities during Croatia’s 1991-95 war for independence. Prosecutors say they found photographs of an oil painting by the Italian master worth more than 1 million euros ($1.3 million) that they believe Hadzic has. The prosecutors said in a statement “we suspect that the painting was intended for sale to collect funds for his hiding.” The statement gave no name or description of the painting shown on the photographs.
Hadzic and wartime Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic are the last two suspects wanted by the U.N. court in The Hague, Netherlands.
Serbia must arrest the last two if it wants to move on in its bid to join the European Union.”

“A painting by the late Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani worth an estimated $1 million has been stolen from a private Brussels residence, the public prosecutor’s office said Monday. The title of the painting, a portrait of a woman, was not known. A spokesman said three masked men stole the canvas Sunday from the home of an 87-year-old woman after tying and gagging her nurse.”

“Op 3 januari werd in een grot in Beez, nabij Namen, het lijk gevonden van Stéphane Mandelbaum, een jonge Brusselse kunstschilder. De man was vermoord met een kogel door het hoofd en zijn lichaam was bewerkt met bijtend zuur. Al snel bracht het gerecht de moord in verband met de diefstal van een kostbaar schilderij van Modigliani, door drie mannen,onder wie Mandelbaum. Er zou ruzie ontstaan zijn over de verdeling van de buit. Bij elke stap die het onderzoek zette, tuimelden de speurders over nieuwe Mossadconnecties. Het gestolen schilderij werd teruggevonden bij een huiszoeking in de woning van Rami Weinbaum in Vorst. Weinbaum bleek een voormalige agent van de Mossad te zijn, maar ook een topman van de Leumi Bank of Israël en als dusdanig een belangrijke financier van de staat Israël, én daarnaast ook een belangrijke spil?guur in de internationale kunstsmokkel. Kort voor de moord op Mandelbaum had Weinbaum, samen meteen ander bendelid, tien liter bijtend zuur gekocht bij een Brusselse drogist. Het gerecht verdacht Weinbaum ervan de opdrachtgever te zijn voor de moord op Mandelbaum en hij werd in voorhechtenis genomen. Maar in zijn cel wist Weinbaum zelfmoord te plegen.”

“Pour le vol du Modigliani, qui fait beaucoup de bruit, la bande a fait appel au jeune artiste bruxellois Stéphane Mandelbaum, qui a réalisé une copie du célèbre tableau pour la laisser à la place de l’original. Mais les gangsters n’aiment pas trop les témoins gênants. Le 3 janvier 1987, on retrouve le cadavre de Mandelbaum dans une grotte à Beez, près de Namur. Il a une balle dans la tête, et son corps a été mutilé à l’acide, dans le plus pur style mafieux. En 1992, Juan Borgès est condamné par contumace, en même temps que quelques autres membres de la bande, pour le vol du Modigliani, mais pas pour le meurtre. Personne ne sera d’ailleurs condamné pour ce crime.”
Begin 1987, ik woonde in Brussel en herinner mij de ophef en kende zijn werk. Mandelbaum had een reputatie en werkte ’s nachts in de hoerenbuurt van Gare du Nord omringd door klanten, pooiers en criminelen.
Mandelbaum zou dus een vervalsing hebben geleverd.
Ik zou willen weten van welk origineel en waar zijn beide werken nu?
